Will LA give a bittersweet goodbye to community staples Slauson Donuts and Hungry Harold’s? Classic LA eateries face closure and change as a result of what developers call an “Opportunity Zone” designated under TOC Tier 4 for new housing initiatives near the intersection of the Hyde Park Metro station. CBRE’s 1st VP, Simon Mattox, leads the southern California team in investment sales business which focuses exclusively on retail assets. After last summer’s unfortunate crash just after renovations, Slauson Donuts’ owners decided to permanently close and their lot has been up for sale for $2.3 Million.

Even though their longtime neighbor Hungry Harold’s lease isn’t up until 2028 all bids on the property were expected to close May 11th of this year! For generations, Slauson Donuts has been more than just a place to satisfy cravings for treats and Hungry Harolds an anchor for locals; my personal fav being the pastrami sandwich and og paper bag seasoned fries. As the community faces the closures, we shine a light on the resilience of the Crenshaw District and hold these establishments close to our hearts. In the face of transformation, the strength of the community's bond will serve as a guiding light, ensuring that the essence remains even as new high-rise apartments take root. How can the neighborhood retain its sense of belonging while embracing this wave of development? What's the potential impact of high-rise apartments on the community's character, economy, and culture? Questions we need answered fr fr! We encourage the community to research, come together, engage with local decision-makers, and actively shape the future of our neighborhood.

CIM Group Developers & West Angeles Church of God in Christ partner to bring quality of life to Jefferson & West Adams Developers at CIM Group whose motto is “Investing in Urban Communities”'... acquired the former LA staple West Angeles Church of God in Christ at 3045 Crenshaw Blvd. Despite the backlash from long-time residents for what they believe is their role in the “hyper gentrification” of the area, the partnership between West Angeles and the CIM Group dates back nearly two decades. They’ve partnered to bring positive change by transforming the vacant house of worship into a 6-story, mixed-use development with residential amenities, 168 studio, one- and two-bedroom units and 40,000 square feet of ground floor retail above underground parking. But only 10% of the residential is set aside for affordable housing units, making only 16 or 17 of the 168 units available for low income residents(Boombastic side eye). It’s said that the proceeds of the purchase of the 1.3-acre lot for $13.5 million will go to support the construction of their community serving building,The Family Life Center, that opens at the end of 2023. Let’s see how this acquisition really impacts the community in the long run!

SOMEBODY YOU SHOULD KNOW

This week we dropped our SBRBN Taste Maker’s list. This is a list of the people who are are moving culture forward in Los Angeles. For this month we wanted to put together a list of those who are doing so in the event space. If you know LA parties…. you know what to expect. A lot of bottle popping, a lot of standing around & even more mean mugging. Everybody on this list is changing the narrative & here is why…

BRICK… Although he isn’t an LA native. He’s made the impossible possible. His event "Ebony Beach Club” brings thousands to the beach every summer in hopes to connect black & brown people with a space that we seemingly have been kept outside of. SUFRING!

Six Sev… Sev is a special person. He’s been leading the charge of the yearly Juneteenth Festival that broke the bank this year if we’re talking attendance. Using the eye-test I’m willing to bet there were over 5,000 people in gathered in Leimert Park all in the name of black freedom & business.

Rose Gawd… One of my personal favorites. RoseGawd has been lighting the city on fire with her weekly parties. What makes her different is she’s bringing a very tasteful, elegant vibe to a LA. Less bottle popping & more waste movements from pretty ladies. Gotta Love Rose gawd..

THE STRAND HOUSE sits right on the edge of Manhattan Beach. Its trendy architecture, winding stairs, and large glass windows overlooking the ocean are impossible to pass up.
