UCLA Pro-Palestine Protesters Clash With Police
On Thursday, a second pro-Palestinian encampment was set up on UCLA's campus, coinciding with Chancellor Gene Block's testimony before Congress. SkyFOX footage showed protesters erecting large plywood and metal barriers and setting up tables, chairs, and tents between Kerckhoff and Moore halls. Students for Justice in Palestine announced the new encampment on Instagram, urging immediate support but warning of potential arrests. Visible campus security and a call for mutual aid from UCLA PD led to a citywide tactical alert by the Los Angeles Police Department.
Ethan, a PhD student, explained the protest's purpose to FOX 11, highlighting the UC's $32 billion investment in arms and alleged support for actions against Palestinians. "We find that morally reprehensible," Ethan stated, emphasizing the commitment of students, workers, and faculty allies to pressuring the university to divest. By early afternoon, clashes with police occurred as protesters moved toward Murphy Hall and Dodd Hall, but the buildings were cleared by 5:30 p.m. without any arrests.
This protest coincided with Block's testimony before the House Committee on Education and Workforce regarding the university's handling of an earlier pro-Palestinian encampment. Block admitted to shortcomings in the university's initial response and announced the creation of a new office of campus safety. The hearing, which also included leaders from Northwestern and Rutgers universities, scrutinized the handling of campus protests and the protection of Jewish students from antisemitism. Block, set to retire at the end of July, pledged accountability and reinforced the university's commitment to safety, academic freedom, and free speech.
