An investigation is underway after a disturbing video surfaced showing an LAPD officer punching a handcuffed Black man in the face during a traffic stop in Watts, Los Angeles.
The incident occurred on July 28, 2024, when two officers detained the man, identified as Alexander Mitchell, for allegedly double parking his car in the wrong direction. A bystander captured the shocking moment on video, which has since gone viral. In the footage, Mitchell can be heard asking, "What did I do?" before one of the officers delivers a punch to his face.
The officer claims Mitchell was resisting, but Mitchell denies this, saying, "No, I'm not." The LAPD has acknowledged the incident and removed the officer involved from field duties pending an investigation.
Mitchell was taken to the hospital by ambulance and later charged with obstructing an investigation. At a press conference, Mitchell's mother, An'tneal Harris, expressed outrage and called for accountability. "That officer sucker-punched my son while he was in handcuffs. It's horrible.
I could have been here planning for a funeral. Something has to be done. It has to stop." Mitchell's attorney, Brad Gage, described the incident as "brutal," "uncalled for," and "unjustified," demanding justice and accountability. The incident has sparked widespread concern and highlights the need for police reform and accountability.
