LOS ANGELES LISTED THE 5TH MOST UNAFFORDABLE CITY TO LIVE IN THE WORLD
A recent study by the Demographic International Housing Affordability report has ranked Los Angeles as the 5th most "impossibly unaffordable" city to live in the world The study analyzed housing costs in 94 major markets across eight countries, including the US, Canada, Australia, and the UK.
According to the report, LA's median multiple - the price-to-income ratio that divides the median house price by the median household income - is 10.9, indicating a severely unaffordable housing market. This means that the average household income in LA is not enough to afford the average house price, making it difficult for residents to purchase homes.
The study found that the top 5 "impossibly unaffordable" cities are:
1. Hong Kong, China (16.7)
2. Sydney, Australia (13.3)
3. Vancouver, Canada (12.3)
4. San Jose, California (11.9)
5. Los Angeles, California (10.9)
The report attributes the affordability crisis to urban containment policies, which limit the land available for housing, driving up prices. The increase in remote work during the pandemic has also fueled demand for housing, particularly in suburban and exurban areas.
This study highlights the urgent need for affordable housing solutions in LA and other cities struggling with housing affordability. As the cost of living continues to rise, it's essential for policymakers and developers to work together to create more affordable options for residents.
