Jordan Downs In Watts Have Received $11 Million For A New Jordan Downs Central Park

The Los Angeles City Council has approved an $11 million grant to revitalize Jordan Downs, a public housing community in Watts, with the construction of Jordan Downs Central Park. NBA legend Magic Johnson joined forces with the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles (HACLA) to secure funding.

This significant investment will transform a 9-acre vacant land within the Jordan Downs housing complex into a vibrant green space. The park's design incorporates community feedback, featuring sports facilities, including basketball courts and soccer fields, a playground and splash pad for kids, walking trails and exercise stations, a community garden, and public art installations. "This park will be a safe haven for our youth, a place for families to gather, and a symbol of hope for our community," said Magic Johnson.

Jordan Downs Central Park aims to address the scarcity of recreational spaces in Watts, promoting physical activity, community engagement, and social cohesion. The project aligns with HACLA's vision to transform Jordan Downs into a vibrant, mixed-use community. Construction is slated to begin in 2025, with completion expected by 2027.

"This investment will have a lasting impact on the lives of Jordan Downs residents," said HACLA CEO, Doug Guthrie. The $11 million grant is part of a broader effort to revitalize the Jordan Downs community, which includes a $1.2 billion redevelopment of Jordan Downs into a mixed-use community, featuring 1,400 new residential units, retail and commercial spaces, and community facilities.

Jordan Downs Central Park represents a significant step towards creating a thriving, inclusive community in Watts. With Magic Johnson's support and HACLA's leadership, this project will bring tangible benefits to residents, fostering a brighter future for generations to come.
