California Bill Proposes Extending Bar Hours to 4 A.M. in Downtown Areas

As of January 1, 2026, a proposed California bill would authorize bars and restaurants within designated hospitality zones to extend alcohol service until 4 a.m. on specified days. Under current state law, alcohol sales are prohibited across California from 2 a.m. to 6 a.m.

This proposal echoes an earlier effort by Senator Scott Wiener, a San Francisco Democrat, who introduced a 2018 bill to establish a pilot program in nine cities—among them Los Angeles, Long Beach, West Hollywood, Coachella, and Palm Springs—allowing alcohol sales until 4 a.m. That measure was rejected by then-Governor Jerry Brown, who argued in his veto message, “I believe the period from midnight to 2 a.m. already presents sufficient challenges without adding two additional hours of potential disorder.” Senator Wiener has since noted that significant developments, including the widespread availability of ride-share services, have altered the landscape since Brown’s 2018 decision, providing safer transportation options for individuals returning home after late-night drinking.
