After 75 Days, Los Angeles Issues Only Four Permits for House Reconstruction

Seventy-five days after devastating wildfires ravaged Los Angeles, particularly the Pacific Palisades area, the city has issued only four building permits for homeowners to rebuild or repair their properties. The fires, which destroyed or damaged over 6,000 homes, prompted Mayor Karen Bass to issue an executive order in January 2025 to expedite the permitting process, aiming for approvals within 30 days of application submission. Despite these efforts, the slow pace of permit issuance has sparked significant frustration among residents and local officials.

The first permit was issued on March 5, 2025, for repairs to a fire-damaged home near Rustic Canyon, with three additional permits following, two for full rebuilds. City officials, including Mayor Bass, have established one-stop permitting centers and waived certain fees to ease the process. Governor Gavin Newsom also issued a state executive order suspending environmental and coastal permitting requirements to speed up reconstruction. However, with only four permits approved out of thousands needed, progress remains sluggish.
