ARSON SUSPECTED AT MASSIVE ONTARIO WAREHOUSE FIRE

A massive six-alarm fire tore through a 1.2 million square-foot Kimberly-Clark distribution center in Ontario, CA in the early morning hours of April 7th. The warehouse, stocked with paper goods like Kleenex and toilet paper, grew fast and activated the sprinklers. At its peak, 175 firefighters and 20 engines from LA, San Bernardino, and Riverside counties were on scene. Crews stayed battling hotspots nearly 12 hours later. The building and its inventory are considered a total loss with a partial roof collapse, though all 20 employees on site escaped without injury.

Record Typhus Outbreak in LA

LA County reported a record of 220 flea-borne typhus cases in 2025, with nearly 90% of cases requiring hospitalization. Exposure can occur through infected fleas carried by animals like rats, stray cats, and opossums, or when fleas hitch rides on domestic pets. Symptoms such as fever, headache, and rash typically appear in 1–2 weeks. If caught early, the disease is treatable with antibiotics. As cases rise around the county, health officials urge residents to prevent infection by using flea control on pets, avoiding contact with stray animals, and reducing wildlife access to homes.

Incoming $15M Compton Arts Center

Fulton Leroy Washington (Mr. Wash), a painter who served 21 years for a non-violent drug offense before being pardoned, is raising funds to establish a community arts center in Compton, CA. Its mission is to to use creative expression to cope with trauma and assist with the transitioning formerly incarcerated community from prison back into society. The center aims to provide up to 6 months housing for people that have been newly released and art therapy/education to prevent aid rehabilitation and prevent re-incarceration.

LA Unified Administrators Join Teachers in Strike

LA Unified School District administrators voted overwhelmingly to join teachers and support staff for a strike on April 14th, marking the 1st time in decades that all 3 major unions would walk out together. The multi-union strike stems from stalled contract negotiations over pay, staffing, and working conditions, with unions demanding significant raises while the district cites budget constraints. If no agreement is reached, schools serving roughly 400,000 students would likely close, disrupting classes, childcare, and essential services for families. The move increases pressure on the district to reach a deal quickly as tensions escalate.

Santa Monic Approves $3M Third St Promenade Revitalization

Santa Monica City Council unanimously approved a $3M economic recovery package to revitalize the Third Street Promenade, aiming to bring vibrancy back to the downtown area. Part of a broader realignment plan, this initiative includes funding for increased cleanliness, enhanced public safety, and business-friendly initiatives to boost the local economy and attract visitors while also increasing police presence through new substations.
