LONG BEACH IS TESTING NEW PUBLIC TOILETS EQUIPPED WITH 10- MINUTE TIMERS AND MOBILR PHONE ACCESS

Long Beach, California, is rolling out a pilot program for high-tech public restrooms designed to address common issues like safety, cleanliness, and accessibility. These restrooms, part of a broader urban innovation push, come with a unique twist: a strict 10-minute usage limit and a mobile phone requirement for entry. Users must scan a QR code or use an app to unlock the door, which ties access to a digital system that tracks time and ensures the facility is vacated promptly. Once the 10 minutes are up, an alert or automated system (details are sparse on whether it’s a loud buzzer or a polite nudge) encourages the user to exit.

The time limit aims to prevent loitering, vandalism, or misuse, which have plagued public restrooms in many cities. By keeping turnover high, the city hopes to maintain cleaner facilities and ensure more people can access them throughout the day. The mobile phone requirement, meanwhile, is meant to enhance security by creating a digital record of who enters, potentially deterring criminal activity. It also allows the city to monitor usage patterns and respond to maintenance needs in real-time.
